Adoption Blogger Day

Today, adoptive families & supporters throughout the US are blogging about their adoption experience.

Adoption has been in the news again, for heartbreaking reasons. But what must be remembered is that for every family that falls apart, for every heart-wrenching headline, there are thousands upon thousands of success stories. Stories of families made complete, parents given new joy, children given new hope and love and a future that shines.

Two of our five children - both our daughters - are adopted. Miriam came to us from China in 2002, at the age of one year. Suzannah was 3 when we brought her home from Russia in 2008. Neither of those journeys was easy. The cost in time and money and effort is monumental. But every time I see my girls I know that they were the best possible use of that time and money and effort.

Our girls are thriving. Miriam just turned 9, is in third grade, and loves to dance, do gymnastics, and giggle with her friends. After months of practice she has just learned to do a back walkover, and oh, the joy in her face when she made it at last! Her teachers always comment on her kindness and compassion. She is a delightful girl who is forever hiding little notes and cards around the house for us.

Suzannah adapted easily to being in a family. She picked up English fairly quickly, and now is quite adept at bossing her older siblings. She is facing some challenges and developmental delays, but is now receiving services that will help her reach her true potential. Zana loves nursery school, playing on the playground, and Buzz Lightyear. There's very little in our lives that can't be fixed by a Zana hug.

And what of our boys? Growing our family through adoption was also a positive experience for them. They came with us to China - a trip that forever altered their perception of their lives. They welcomed first Miri, then Zana into the family with open arms, learning firsthand that love knows no genetic restrictions. They use the adoptions as the base for many school assignments. They're helping to plan a yard sale to raise money for kids in orphanages. They squabble among themselves but are forever united in their love for their sisters.

Adoption gives kids a life.
Adoption makes families possible.
Adoption grows love.

Adoption WORKS.

Kris, This is wonderful. I remember when you were both in the thinking stages of adopting another girl and all the waiting, waiting, waiting that went on. I am so glad Suzanna is there with your loving family and best-sister now! You deserve so much love and so does she.

Oh, thanks, sweetie! It's been a wild ride at times, as you well know, but we're so very very blessed.

:::sob::: That was so wonderful, as is what you've done. I can't believe Miri is so BIG! Just a year younger than the kids I teach.
